SPACE - Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions
SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) is an evidence-based, parent-focused treatment designed to help children and adolescents struggling with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and related concerns. One of the unique aspects of SPACE is that treatment works directly with parents—children do not need to attend sessions for the approach to be effective.
Parents naturally want to reduce their child's distress, and in doing so may unknowingly make accommodations that reinforce anxiety over time. These accommodations can include providing excessive reassurance, changing family routines, helping a child avoid feared situations, or participating in rituals related to OCD. In SPACE, we work together to identify these patterns and gradually reduce accommodations while increasing supportive, confident responses that help children build resilience.
Treatment focuses on strengthening parents' ability to respond with empathy while encouraging their child's independence and confidence. Rather than asking children to "just face their fears," SPACE helps parents communicate acceptance of their child's emotions while expressing confidence in their ability to cope. This balanced approach can reduce family stress, improve communication, and support lasting change.
Throughout treatment, I collaborate closely with parents to develop practical strategies that fit their family's unique needs and values. Together, we create a plan that promotes healthy coping, reduces anxiety-driven patterns, and empowers both parents and children to navigate challenges with greater confidence. SPACE can be used as a stand-alone intervention or alongside individual therapy or medication management, depending on the needs of the child and family.
