iCBT - Inference Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for OCD

Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) that focuses on the thinking processes that give rise to obsessive doubt. Rather than emphasizing habituation to anxiety, I-CBT helps individuals understand how they come to distrust their direct experience and become drawn into imagined possibilities that fuel obsessions.

In therapy, we work together to identify the reasoning patterns that lead from everyday situations to obsessive doubt. By learning to recognize these patterns and strengthen trust in your senses, experiences, and common-sense reasoning, you can begin to disengage from obsessive thinking before it leads to compulsive behaviors.

Treatment is collaborative, individualized, and paced according to your needs. We explore the themes underlying your OCD, develop greater confidence in reality-based information, and reduce the influence of the imagined scenarios that keep OCD cycles going. As clients become more skilled at recognizing and challenging inferential confusion, they often experience greater confidence, reduced distress, and increased freedom to engage in meaningful activities without being controlled by obsessive fears.

I-CBT has been shown to be effective for many forms of OCD and may be especially helpful for individuals who are looking for an alternative or complement to traditional exposure-based approaches. The goal of treatment is not simply to reduce symptoms, but to help you regain trust in yourself and your ability to respond to uncertainty with confidence rather than compulsions.
